The state of Utah is the first state to opt out of any internet poker regulation on a federal level. Governor Gary Herbert signed it into law and passed by state legislature. State legislature included the clause in HB108 “If any federal law is enacted that authorizes Internet gambling in the states and that federal law provides that individual states may opt out of Internet gambling, this state shall opt out of Internet gambling in the manner provided by federal law and within the time frame provided by that law.” Utah is only one, of two states that never allowed any form of gambling.
Don’t count out the state of Utah to have a change of heart. It is still quite possible that Utah may decide to get involved in internet poker if it is sanctioned by the United States, not to mention that the states that share the border with Utah is getting benefits. It has been reported that the executive director of the Poker Players Alliance John Pappas was quoted as saying “We weren’t happy with the outcome” With this new law, it will be a simple misdemeanor offense to play poker on the internet in Utah.
